What is TRUTH?
Is it relative? Does it depend upon each individual’s “filter” or experience? Is TRUTH just an opinion or a point of view that has equal weight or validity? Does TRUTH change as society twists and turns with time and technology?
All great questions. All difficult to answer. It may even seem that the answer is “relative” to individual belief systems. Certainly, this is the most widely accepted philosophical answer. So does that make this relative truth the only kind of TRUTH?
Let’s ask a question about TRUTH with a foundational qualifier . . .
Is there an ABSOLUTE TRUTH? A cut and dry yes or no? A right or a wrong? An IS or an IS NOT? Some may simply resign themselves to the answer that is a question, “why ask why?”
Are you daring? Do you want to know if “ABSOLUTE TRUTH” exists or not? Wouldn’t it be great to know for sure? Try this simple exercise, and decide for yourself. Be honest and open minded because the answer is undeniable, and it may shock you . . .
Have you and another person go into a closet or a room where no one can see you. Have one of you poke the other in the arm with a finger. Now, when the two of you are in the presence of one or more other people, have the one who poked the other in the arm ask “did I poke you in the arm?” Have the one poked answer truthfully and say “yes”. Then have the one who poked the other say, “prove it!” This “simple” truth cannot be proven. Yet, it is “ABSOLUTE” . . .
How can you prove something as simple as a poke in the arm if there were no additional witnesses; no photos or videos; no marks or physical evidence of any kind? What if one of you decided to deny that it ever happened? Is it now a matter of opinion, or did it still happen?
Here is the inescapable, undeniable conclusion:
YOU CAN KNOW AN ABSOLUTE TRUTH, EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN NOT PROVE IT.
We convict people of murder with NO witnesses. We convict more easily with one or more witnesses. Yet, we have such a hard time believing that Jesus Christ lived; that He is the Son of God; that He was crucified, dead and buried; that three days later, He arose from the dead and conquered death and physically ascended into Heaven; and that by accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life and Savior of your soul, God will forgive you of all your Sins, and grant you eternal life in Heaven – for FREE. No work, no balance sheet. No qualifier at all. Just believe.
For me, that was the hardest part – Believing. Is the Christian Bible just one story out of 25 or so “holy books”? Does God really exist? The answer is either a YES or a NO, and it is ABSOLUTE whether we like it or not. If it is YES, then which belief system about God is the TRUTH? Is it the story of Jesus, the one Mohamed tells, or yet another one? Are the Jews right or Buddhists? Could they all be right in their own way?
Wouldn’t it be great if God poked us in the arm so hard that we could KNOW THE TRUTH?
God gave us the answer through this promise: “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Seek TRUTH, and TRUTH will find you. It’s God’s promise, not mine.
