ANCIENT BIBLE MANUSCRIPTS

Prior to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, in Biblical Judea, in 1947, the oldest complete Hebrew manuscript of the Old Testament was the Leningrad Codex, dating to around 1008 AD—a full thousand years after Christ.

However, from the KJV defense camp, the “older is better” rule used by modern scholars is completely rejected. Here is how the KJV supporters argue against that philosophy using both history and the Dead Sea Scrolls:

“Older” Does Not Mean “Purer”

KJV defenders argue that age does not guarantee accuracy. Older is not Better, in this case. In the early church era, heretics actively altered biblical manuscripts. If a manuscript was full of errors, it was rejected, set aside, and not used. Usually destroyed. but a small handfull made it through time. They sat on a shelf ot in a stone trash bin unused in an arid climate (like ancient Alexandira Egypt, or the southern tip of the Sinai Desert – to be exact). They survived for centuries. Conversely, the accurate manuscripts were copied so frequently that they wore out from use. Therefore, KJV advocates argue that surviving “older” manuscripts (like Codex Sinaiticus or Vaticanus) are not better; they are simply well-preserved mistakes. Another consideration, the early church leadership was made up of Jewish converts. Some Rabbis. An ancient rabbinical practice was, just before a scroll became illegiable from frequent use, they would meticulously copy it, then reverently destory it or bury it. It is believd this practice carried over to the early church.

The Dead Sea Scrolls Actually Vindicated Preservation

Modern textual critics expected the 2,000-year-old Qumran scrolls to prove that the Hebrew Bible had radically changed over a thousand years of copying. Instead, the Dead Sea Scrolls proved the exact opposite. For example, the Great Isaiah Scroll matched the 1,000-year-newer Masoretic text almost perfectly, word-for-word, except for minor spelling variations. KJV defenders use this to prove that God preserves His word through a continuous chain of copying, making the “older is better” hunt for lost fragments completely counterproductive.

The Myth of the “Lost” Word

The fundamental premise of modern textual criticism is that the true text was “lost” for centuries until 19th-century archeologists dug up older fragments. KJV advocates argue this contradicts God’s promises of preservation (such as Psalm 12:6-7 and Isaiah 40:8). They believe God never allowed His Word to be lost in a cave or a monastery garbage bin for 1,500 years (where the Codex Sinaiticus was found.) only to be “corrected” by modern secular scholars.

Textus Receptus (Received Text) versus the Critical Text, focusing on the massive problem of disagreement among those three “older” manuscripts.

The Numbers Game: Majority Text vs. Critical Text

To understand the KJV argument, you have to look at the sheer volume of evidence:

  • The Majority Text (Byzantine): Over 95% of all surviving Greek New Testament manuscripts (more than 5,000 copies) belong to this family. They come from different centuries and different geographic areas, yet they have an astonishing 99% + agreement with each other. This is the stream that underlies the Textus Receptus.
  • The Critical Text (Alexandrian): This text relies almost entirely on less than 1% of surviving manuscripts—primarily the “big three”: Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, and Codex Alexandrinus.

The Illusion of “Agreement” Among the Big Three

Modern textual critics present Sinaiticus, Vaticanus, and Alexandrinus as a unified, older, and superior witness. However, KJV defenders point out that this is entirely false. When you actually compare these three manuscripts against each other, they do not agree.

Codex Sinaiticus vs. Codex Vaticanus

Dean John Burgon, a famous 19th-century textual scholar heavily cited by the KJV camp, did an extensive study on these two manuscripts. He noted that in the Gospels alone, Sinaiticus and Vaticanus disagree with each other more than 3,000 times. They omit different words, add different phrases, and contradict each other on basic narratives. KJV advocates ask: If they cannot agree with each other, how can they be trusted to “correct” the thousands of manuscripts that do agree?

The Condition of Codex Sinaiticus

Discovered in a monastery at Mt. Sinai in the 19th century, Sinaiticus is notoriously messy. KJV defenders rightly point out that it is covered in erasures, corrections, and alterations. Historically, it is estimated that at least ten different scribes altered the text of Sinaiticus over the centuries. It was so poorly regarded by its original owners that parts of it were reportedly found in a stone trash basket destined for the monastery’s incinerator.

The Deletions in Codex Vaticanus

Stored in the Vatican library, this manuscript completely omits massive chunks of Scripture that the church used for 1,500 years. It leaves out the last 12 verses of Mark, the woman caught in adultery in John 8, and entire books like Revelation and parts of Hebrews. KJV advocates argue that a manuscript with so many glaring omissions cannot be labeled “pure” just because it is old.

The Textus Receptus: The Preserved Chain

The KJV defenders view the Textus Receptus not as a text that dropped out of heaven in 1611, but as the culmination of the providentially preserved Majority Text.

When Desiderius Erasmus compiled the Greek text in the early 1500s (which evolved into the Textus Receptus), he used manuscripts that represented the Byzantine text-type – Greek, written and spoken in the Koine dialect. KJV defenders argue that this text-type was used, copied, and worn out by the actual living Church for generations.

Because God promised to keep His words available to all generations (Psalm 12:6-7), KJV advocates argue it makes no sense that the “true” Bible was hidden in the Vatican library (Vaticanus) or a desert monastery (Sinaiticus) for 1,500 years, completely unavailable to the Body of Christ until modern critics “rediscovered” it.

Westcott and Hort: The Architects of the Critical Text

To understand why the KJV suppoerters firmly reject modern versions, you have to look at the two men who built the foundation for them: Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort. In 1881, these two Cambridge scholars released The New Testament in the Original Greek, introducing the Critical Text and successfully dethroning the Textus Receptus in modern academia.

From the KJV defense perspective, Westcott and Hort were not just objective scientists; they were men with deep theological biases against orthodox biblical doctrines. Their own written words prove they were more Pagan than Christian. KJV defenders frequently quote from their personal letters and journals to prove three main points:

  • Hatred for the Textus Receptus: Hort openly referred to the Textus Receptus as “vile” and “villainous” long before he even began his formal textual studies. KJV advocates argue his research was a biased mission to destroy the traditional text rather than an objective evaluation of facts.
  • Rejection of Biblical Inerrancy: Both men denied the literal, verbal inspiration of Scripture. Westcott referred to the literal creation account in Genesis as a “poem” and “allegory,” while Hort rejected the literal existence of Eden and the historical Fall of man.
  • Unorthodox Doctrines: In their correspondence, both scholars expressed beliefs that strayed far from traditional biblical Christianity. Hort questioned the substitutionary atonement of Christ (calling it “immoral”), expressed a deep belief in Purgatory, and both men showed a strong affinity for Roman Catholic mysticism.

The KJV camp asks a fundamental question: Why should the global Church trust a Greek text engineered by two men who did not even believe the Bible was the completely infallible, inspired Word of God?

The Physical Marks of Erasure and Alteration in Codex Vaticanus

Modern scholars claim Codex Vaticanus (Manuscript B) is one of the purest surviving copies of the New Testament. However, KJV defenders point out that the physical manuscript tells a completely different story. It is a highly manipulated, heavily altered document.

  • The Scribe Inking Over the Text: In the 10th or 11th century, a scribe noticed that the original 4th-century ink was fading. This scribe literally traced over almost every single letter in the entire manuscript with fresh ink. KJV advocates note that during this process, the scribe acted as an editor—intentionally skipping words, letters, and phrases he disagreed with, and changing characters to fit his own theological views.
  • The Infamous Margin Note in Hebrews 1: Because of this heavy-handed editing, Vaticanus contains one of the most revealing marginal notes in textual history. In Hebrews 1:3, an earlier scribe had written the correct traditional reading, but a later corrector erased it to match a different reading. A third scribe came along, erased the correction, restored the original words, and wrote a furious note in the margin directed at the previous editor: “Fool and knave, leave the old reading, don’t change it!” (“Αμαθέστατε και κακέ, άφες τον παλαιόν, μή μεταποίει”).
  • Deliberate Blank Spaces: Vaticanus contains mysterious blank columns. Most famously, it leaves a completely blank column at the end of Mark 16, exactly where the last 12 verses belong. This is highly unusual for this manuscript. KJV defenders argue this proves the scribe knew the last 12 verses were Scripture, intentionally left them out to match a corrupted text, but left a blank space because he felt guilty or knew something was missing.

Dean John Burgon: The Un-Debunked Champion of the KJV

When Westcott and Hort released their Critical Text in 1881, one man rose up to systematically dismantle their entire theory: Dean John William Burgon, the Dean of Chichester Cathedral and a brilliant textual scholar. His book, The Revision Revised, remains the premier academic defense of the traditional text.

While modern scholars often dismiss Burgon as an old-fashioned traditionalist, the KJV camp highlights that his actual arguments have never been logically or factually debunked. Burgon defeated the Westcott and Hort theory using several core principles:

  • The Test of Numbers and Universality: Burgon argued that it is mathematically absurd to ignore 95% of all surviving manuscripts in favor of two or three. He stated that if a king sends out 100 messengers with a decree, and 95 of them return with the exact same message while 5 return with wild contradictions, any logical ruler would trust the 95.
  • The Antiquity of the Majority Text: Westcott and Hort claimed that the Majority Text was a “late” invention created by the church in the 4th century. Burgon completely shattered this by examining the writings of the Early Church Fathers (like Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, and Clement). He proved that these Church Fathers—who lived in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, long before Sinaiticus and Vaticanus were written—were quoting the exact readings found in the Textus Receptus.
  • The “Two False Witnesses” Argument: Burgon demonstrated that Sinaiticus and Vaticanus are so fundamentally corrupted that they cannot even stand trial as valid witnesses. He famously wrote that it is easier to find two verses that disagree between Sinaiticus and Vaticanus than it is to find two verses that agree. He concluded that they survived only because they were recognized as garbage by the early church and safely left on a shelf, untouched by the hands of believers who would have worn them out through constant use.
